Rob Davies has barely had time to catch his breath since becoming South Grand Prairie 's head football coach and campus athletic coordinator. Davies learned at 7 a.m. Wednesday he would be only the fourth football coach since SGP opened its doors in 1969.
Davies replaces David Fisher, who resigned after seven seasons earlier in the week for personal reasons. Davies had been an assistant to Fisher the last 13years and the Warriors' defensive coordinator since coming to SGP in 2001.
Davies previously coached under Fisher at Owasso, Ok. just outside Tulsa . This will be Davies' first head coaching job.
Davies spent most of Wednesday at the school district's administration building in meetings with athletic director Fred Clausen. Davies then spent a few hours at a coaching clinic at Texas Christian University .
"It's been a whirlwind," Davies said. "I am really excited that it didn’t go very long for our coaches and our kids. The kids were excited because it will be the same coaching staff."
Clausen said earlier in the week it could take up to 10 days to decide whether he would hire from inside or open it up to outside job applicants. But after meeting with Davies several times over the last few days he quickly made his decision.
"In the last few days we’ve had Rob in for several interviews,” Clausen said. “The administration and myself felt like the best person to continue our program was Rob.
"Rob showed us great leadership abilities as [Fisher's] right-hand man. He had great leadership capabilities when Fisher wasn't around or had to be away. Rob stepped right in and kept things going and we have a good program and a good staff in place, and we felt it was important to retain that continuity."
