The Wolves are headed west.
Defending Class AA state champion Buford will open the 2008 football season on Aug. 30 in the Texas vs. USA Showcase at Texas Stadium in Dallas.
Coach Jess Simpson said Friday that Buford's opponent has not been set yet, since the event will pit several Texas schools against out-of-state teams over two days. But it will likely be either Justin Northwest, from suburban Dallas-Fort Worth, or Mansfield Timberview of Arlington, Texas.
Either way, Buford will get to play on the home field of the Dallas Cowboys.
"This is going to be a great opportunity for us," Simpson said. "I think our coaches and kids are all pretty doggone excited about it."
Buford also started the 2007 season outside the state, playing in the Ohio vs. USA Challenge in Canton, Ohio. It won that game, beating Grove City (Ohio) 34-7 to begin its undefeated (15-0) year.
Simpson said the Wolves initially hoped to play all their games in Georgia in 2008. But with only nine games scheduled, they were having trouble finding a 10th team willing to play them.
"We kind of had mixed feelings about it," Simpson said. "But we got into a bind where we could not find a 10th game, and the people with this event kept calling. So we decided to do it."
Buford will begin its in-state schedule at home against North Hall on Sept. 5.
